Museum Gets $10-Million; Other Gifts

The Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, in Pensacola, Fla., has received $10-million from Jack Taylor, founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, in St. Louis. Mr. Taylor’s gift will help create the National Flight Academy, which will provide weeklong instruction programs to middle- and high-school students in areas of math and science — such as aerodynamics and meteorology — that are closely related to aviation.
Other nonprofit institutions also received large gifts:
Community Foundation of Sarasota County (Fla.): $7-million bequest from Dorothy J. Price Warnell, of Sarasota, whose late husband was an executive at the DuPont Chemical Company. The gift will establish a fund to provide scholarships for postsecondary education for students from Sarasota County and to support organizations that serve the elderly.
Drexel U. (Philadelphia): $1.5-million bequest from William Utzy, an alumnus who worked at Standard Pressed Steel, in Jenkintown, Pa., to endow a scholarship for students in the College of Engineering.
Garrison Forest School (Owings Mills, Md.): $4.1-million bequest from Miriam B. Vanderveer, a trustee emerita, teacher, and coach at this college-preparatory school for girls, to create a fund to increase faculty salaries, improve benefits, and support faculty-development programs.
New York U.: $5-million from Clive Davis, an alumnus who founded Arista Records, in New York, and who now heads J Records, a joint venture with BMG Entertainment, to create a department of recorded music at the Tisch School of the Arts.
State U. of New York at Morrisville: $1.1-million from Sheila Crump Johnson, a co-founder of Black Entertainment Television, to endow an institute that will provide fellowships, scholarships, and programs to promote leadership and diversity and to help produce a recruitment commercial for the university.
Texas Christian U. (Fort Worth): $1.5 million from Mary Ralph Lowe, president of Maralo, in Houston, to endow a chair in Texas history.
U. of Michigan at Ann Arbor: $1-million from Mike Wallace, the journalist and correspondent on the television news program 60 Minutes, to endow fellowships for journalists.
U. of the Pacific (Stockton, Calif.): $4-million pledge from Neven C. Hulsey, of Horseshoe Bay, Tex., an alumnus and retired chief executive officer of EMJ, a metal distributor, to endow a chair and provide other support for the Eberhardt School of Business.
U. of Texas at Austin: a collection of 3,200 prints worth an estimated $3.5-million from Leo Steinberg, an art historian and critic, for the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art.
