The Netaid.org Foundation awarded $1.7-million in grants to 13 non-profit organizations working to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions in Africa and Kosovo.
Netaid.org is a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme and Cisco Systems to use the Internet to raise public awareness of poverty. The first round of grants was financed by the proceeds from three fund-raising concerts that Netaid.org held in October in New York, London, and Geneva, as well as from donations and merchandise sales.
The foundation has also received $10-million from Cisco Systems and $1-million from KPMG International, and it plans to announce guidelines for future grants this month.
Among the recipients of the first grants were eight non-profit groups that provide development and health-care assistance in Africa. The eight organizations received 11 grants, totaling more than $1.4-million.
Six grants, totaling more than $300,000, were awarded to five groups working in Kosovo.
