New AmeriCorps Recruits Recount Experiences With Floods and Forests

As applications to participate in AmeriCorps soar, The New York Times follows nine members of the National Civilian Conservation Corps, an AmeriCorps residential program for people 18 to 24 years old that does disaster-response and conservation work.
Since joining the program several months ago, they have done post-flood cleanup work in West Virginia, built houses along the Gulf Coast, worked with low-income families in Georgia, and cleared brush for trails in a Maryland state park.
Although conservative critics have derided AmeriCorps, recently expanded by President Obama and Congress, applications to the program have nearly tripled in the past year, the newspaper says.
