New Web Directory Aimed at Donors

February 12, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

Charitable Choices is hoping that its new Web site will encourage people to contribute to its 234 member charities and that it will help donors make informed choices about which groups to support.

All charities listed on the Web site participate in the Combined Federal Campaign, the government’s on-the-job giving program. Those charities pay a fee ranging from $300 to $2,000 to be listed in five print publications that Charitable Choices has distributed for more than a decade, as well as on the Web site, which was created in October.

The focus is on non-profit groups in Washington, D.C., where Charitable Choices is based, but the Web site also lists many national groups. Charities are sorted into categories such as “Civil and Human Rights” and “Mental Health.” When people select an individual charity, they receive the organization’s description of services provided, as well as the amount of money it spends on fund-raising and administrative costs. In addition, the charities have provided answers to six questions, such as “Why do you exist?” and “Why do you need my support?”
