Amount donated in 2014: $70-million

Beneficiary: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Background: Mr. Sarofim, an heir to an Egyptian cotton fortune, founded Fayez Sarofim & Company, an investment-management firm, in 1958.

Mr. Sarofim, who first gave the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, a donation of $75 in 1963, pledged $70-million to expand the museum’s campus, which will be named for him.

The 86-year-old investor’s decades-long association with the institution goes beyond giving: His company manages part of the museum’s nearly $1-billion endowment.

The expansion project will be completed in 2019.
