National Public Radio is recording robust audience growth in listener numbers even as other traditional news outlets such as daily newspapers and television are seeing their audiences decline, reports The Washington Post.
According to figures to be released to member stations today, the cumulative audience for NPR’s daily news shows, including Morning Edition and All Things Considered, reached 20.9 million a week, up 9 percent from 2007. The audience for all the nonprofit broadcasters’ programs rose 8.7 percent to 23.6 million a week.
Despite the audience gains, the network is facing an economic pinch, cutting staff members and other costs to close an $8-million shortfall in its $160-million budget.
