N.Y. to Scale Back on Drug-Counseling Programs for Ex-Convicts

Due to budget cuts, New York will eliminate $8.6-million by the end of the month in contracts between the Department of Correctional Services, the Division of Parole, and nonprofit groups that provide drug counseling to ex-convicts living in the state, reports The New York Times.

“It’s a panicky response,” said Harry K. Wexler, a researcher whose findings suggest that local drug-treatment programs reduce by half re-arrest and re-incarceration rates over five years. “They are cutting their nose off to spite their face.”
