Obituary: Florence Schumacher, Southern Calif. Arts Patron

August 5, 2009

Florence “Floss” Schumacher, who supported Orange County, Calif., arts institutions for three decades, died last month of a stroke at age 86, the Los Angeles Times reports.

A Denver native who moved to Southern California in the mid-1960s, Ms. Schumacher played a key role in establishing the Orange County Performing Arts Center and its resident companies, the Pacific Symphony, the Pacific Chorale, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, and the now-defunct Opera Pacific. Reporters dubbed her a “social lioness” for the lavish galas she threw in connection with her arts activities.
