Radio Host Channels More Than $4-Million to Veterans Charity

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative radio host, is channeling more than $4-million to a charity that provides scholarship aid to the children of Marines killed in Iraq, says The Washington Post.

Mr. Limbaugh had used the term “phony soldiers” on his radio program; a dispute has erupted over whether the radio host was referring to veterans opposed to the war, as his critics say, or to one former soldier in particular who made false claims about his Iraq War service, as Mr. Limbaugh claims. In response to the “phony soldiers” comment, Senate majority leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, and 40 others signed a letter on official Senate letterhead calling the host’s remarks “beyond the pale.”

Mr. Limbaugh turned around and sold the letter for $2.1-million to Betty Brown Casey, a reclusive Washington philanthropist who had previously mostly supported local opera. Mr. Limbaugh said he would then match the donation and give the $4.2-million to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, the largest gift in its history.
