Report Assesses Achievements and Failures of Grant-Making World

State of Philanthropy 2004 is a collection of essays evaluating the success of philanthropy in helping the nation’s neediest people. Written by leading figures in the nonprofit, advocacy, academic, and foundation worlds, the report describes how grant makers might support nonprofit groups in promoting economic equality and social justice. The biennial publication is divided into three sections: “Populations of Philanthropy” examines the relationship between philanthropy and racial, ethnic, and other demographic groups; “Politics of Philanthropy” discusses philanthropy’s engagement with politics and the polarization of right and left; and “Architecture of Philanthropy” describes the trends and the infrastructure of the philanthropic field.
