Rochester, N.Y., Group Gets $14-Million; Other Gifts

The Rochester Area Community Foundation, in New York, has received $14-million from a family from upstate New York that wishes to remain anonymous. The donation created a fund that will be distributed at the donors’ discretion.
The foundation also received $1.7-million of a bequest totaling $5.9-million from Abigail Roberts Van Wagenen, whose late husband was head of the neurological surgery department at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The donation created several funds to support health care and neurosurgical study programs.
The following charities also received large gifts:
Chowan College (Murfreesboro, N.C.): $1-million from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous to endow a fund for international study.
Coastal Carolina U. (Conway, S.C.): $1.8-million bequest from Rebecca Randall Bryan, of Conway, a former employee of the Conway National Bank, to construct a building that will house the university’s humanities and fine-arts college.
Community Foundation for Muskegon County (Muskegon, Mich.): $1-million bequest from Henry J. Klooster, a former bookkeeper in Muskegon, to create a fund to support the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts.
Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region (Appleton, Wis.): $2.5-million bequest from Joan B. Leech, of Neenah, Wis., whose late husband, Fred, owned the Universal Paper Company, to create a fund to support nonprofit groups in Wisconsin.
Goucher College (Towson, Md.): $1.2-million charitable remainder trust from Shirley Kaufmann Morse, of Bradenton, Fla., a retired patent agent and librarian for the GAF Corporation, to establish a scholarship fund for science students.
New Bedford Whaling Museum (Mass.): $1-million from a couple who wishes to remain anonymous for endowment and for capital improvements.
Pennsylvania State U. (University Park): $1.5-million bequest from Harry Lawrence Batschelet II, a former vice president for financial development at the American Red Cross, for scholarships and a professorship.
Purdue U. (West Lafayette, Ind.): $3-million from Richard E. Dauch, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., the co-founder of American Axle & Manufacturing, and his wife, Sandy, to help build a new alumni center.
Saint Xavier U. (Chicago): $1.5-million bequest from Blanche Swift Morris, of Chicago, for capital improvements and endowment.
St. Thomas U. (Miami): $1-million from Carl Buccellato, a university trustee, and his family, to help remodel the entrance to the campus.
St. Viator High School (Arlington Heights, Ill.): $1-million from John Boler, of Inverness, Ill., chairman of the Boler Company, and his wife, Mary Jo, for the school’s capital campaign; and $1-million from Robert Clifford, of Inverness, a lawyer, and his wife, Joan, to help renovate its science laboratories.
U. of Kansas (Lawrence): $4-million pledge from Dana Anderson, of Los Angeles, vice chairman of the board of the Mace Rich Company, in Santa Monica, Calif., for an athletic center. Of the total, Mr. Anderson gave $1-million outright and pledged the remainder.
U. of Louisville (Ky.): $1-million bequest from Florence V. Lutz.
U. of Southern Colorado (Pueblo): $1.4-million bequest from Lois W. Mathis, a former member of the university foundation’s Board of Trustees, for scholarships.
U. of Wyoming Foundation (Laramie): $1-million pledge from John Clay, of Cheyenne, Wyo., a senior vice president at the Cheyenne office of Dain Rauscher, an investment company, and his wife, Esther, to endow a fund to bring artists to the university’s campus, and to expand scholarship funds previously established by the Clays.
Washburn U. (Topeka, Kan.): $2.2-million bequest from Zola Desmond, of Topeka, for scholarships.
