Salvation Army Proceeds With Chicago Center

The Salvation Army is moving ahead with plans to build the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago after a three-year search for a site, reports, the Chicago Tribune. The estimated cost to build and endow the center is $159.8-million.

The majority of the funds for the project will come from the roughly $1.5-billion bequest made to the national Salvation Army by the estate of Joan Kroc, widow of the founder of the McDonald’s Corporation. The 220,000-square-foot center, designed by Helmut Jahn, that will provide sports, arts, educational, and social services.
