Small Nonprofit Groups to Gain From Indiana Tax-Court Ruling

August 10, 2009 | Read Time: 1 minute

Indiana landlords who rent to nonprofit groups at a discount can qualify for property-tax exemptions under a decision issued in July by the state’s Tax Court, the Indianapolis Star reports.

David DePoy, senior vice president of the United Way of Central Indiana, called the ruling “excellent news” for small charities, which often rent rather than own their offices and are usually required by the lease to cover the property levy.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller plans to appeal the ruling, which stemmed from a Hamilton County property owner’s suit seeking a tax exemption because it rented space to a church.
