The Tech Museum of Innovation, in San Jose, Calif., has presented its annual awards to honor the creative use of technology to benefit society. Each award carries a $50,000 cash prize.

The nonprofit Women’s Emergency Communication and Reliable Electricity—or WE CARE Solar—in Berkeley, Calif., won the health award. To improve maternal health in areas where the supply of electricity is unreliable, the organization provides suitcase-size solar electrical systems that hospitals and clinics can use to power lights for nighttime deliveries and surgeries.

Other winners include:

  • The Participatory Culture Foundation, a nonprofit in Boston, won the equality award for Universal Subtitles, a service that allows people to add captions to online videos to make them accessible in other languages or for people who are deaf.
  • Eko India Financial Services, a social-purpose business in New Delhi, won the economic-development award for its mobile banking services, including the provision of savings accounts, for low-income customers.
