Study Finds ‘Obama Effect’ on Black Parents’ School Volunteering

Sixty percent of black parents plan to volunteer at their children’s schools, a 37-point increase from last year, USA Today reports.

GreatSchools, a charity in San Francisco, polled 1,086 parents online about their school involvement. The percentage of white parents saying they will volunteer rose by six points, from 47 percent to 53 percent.

“Clearly, this data is showing that the parent-in-chief, President Obama, is having an impact on parents’ thinking, especially African-American parents’ thinking,” said Bill Jackson, chief executive of GreatSchools.

In several speeches, the president has urged parents to limit television time, read to their kids, and attend parent-teacher conferences.
