Study: Gender Pay Gap Wide at Florida Charities

Women who run nonprofit organizations in Central Florida earn 71 cents for every dollar that men in similar positions earn, indicating a wider pay gap than the national average, according to a new survey reported on in The Orlando Sentinel.

The survey, conducted by the Rollins College Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership Center, polled 153 charities that employ 9,700 people, the paper reports. Margaret Linnane, executive director of the center, says that while women lead nearly two-thirds of charities in the region, men tend to lead the larger and better-paying organizations.

“Women very often are the founders of nonprofit organizations,” Ms. Linnane tells the Sentinel. “And they tend to start small. But then it is taken to the next level in terms of size and service, and with that men tend to take over.”
