THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
History:
Established in 1913 by John D. Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil Company, “to promote the well-being of mankind throughout the world.”
Grant-making areas: arts and humanities, employment and community development, food security, health, and “global inclusion” — efforts to make sure the poor aren’t left out by the process of globalization.
Assets: $3.5-billion as of December 1, 1999.
Grants: The foundation expects to give away $154.3-million in 2000.
Key officials: Gordon Conway, president; Alice Stone Ilchman, chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Application procedures: Many of the foundation’s new grant-making programs are still under development and the foundation is not accepting grant applications for them. Before submitting a proposal, applicants are asked to write letters of inquiry to the foundation, describing the project and its purpose. Applicants are encouraged to request The Rockefeller Foundation: A New Course of Action, a publication describing the foundation’s new grant-making interests. It will also be available on the foundation’s Web site later this month.
