Trends Nonprofit Groups Must Prepare to Face

Building Strong Nonprofits: New Strategies for Growth and Sustainability
edited by John C. Olberding and Lisa Barnwell Williams

This collection of essays looks at the future of nonprofit organizations and philanthropy, examining the increasing presence of female donors, diversity, the use of social media, and other emerging trends and shifts in the nonprofit world.

Mr. Olberding is chief executive of Skystone Ryan, a fund-raising firm, and Ms. Williams is vice president of the company. Mr. Olberding, in the book’s opening chapter, writes that in coming years more donors and charities will seek to form affinity groups to tackle significant problems, and the fund-raising profession will face serious staff shortages and high turnover.

In another chapter, Eugenia V. Colon, a fund-raising and communications consultant, writes that charities must change their thinking about corporations largely as sources of cash and instead for the skills their employees can offer.

Ms. Colon writes: “Nonprofit organizations must expand their thinking beyond cash support and recognize pro bono support as a currency that can produce considerable benefits that will strengthen and ensure organizational viability.”
