Two Activists Receive Major Human-Rights Award

Arthur Chaskalson, the former chief justice of South Africa, and Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmental activist, were given the 2007 Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights, according to a press release by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
The award, which was created by Kaiser in 1992, recognizes individuals who improve the health and lives of poor people in South Africa and around the world.
Chief Justice Chaskalson wrote a new constitution after the rule of apartheid ended in South Africa that included the right for health care. Ms. Maathai works to get women involved in efforts to protect the environment.
