Two California Charities Face Embezzlement Charges

The founder of the African Community Resource Center, a charity that helps African immigrants settle in Los Angeles, has been arrested on suspicion of stealing $1-million, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Nigisti Tesfi — whom Oprah Winfrey once named a “Phenomenal Woman of the Month” — had been under investigation for four years by local police and now faces charges of conspiracy, embezzlement, forgery, and fraud. Her brother and boyfriend also face charges. The reporter was not able to reach Ms. Tesfi for comment.

In another California scandal, The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a former employee at the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health has been accused of stealing $350,000. The article did not include any comment from the employee accused of wrongdoing.
