UCLA Professor Is Accused of Diverting Charity Funds

California is suing a UCLA medical-school professor, claiming he and several associates used money from a nonprofit group he had established to support his own business and research ventures, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Attorney General Jerry Brown’s office said Gerald D. Buckberg, a professor of cardiothoracic surgery, and five officers at his L.B. Research & Education Foundation put more than $500,000 of the charity’s money into their own research or work by companies in which they had a financial interest.
Mr. Brown is seeking to recover the funds and dissolve the nonprofit group. A UCLA spokesman said the university provided evidence to the attorney general’s office as part of the two-year probe. The article says Dr. Buckberg did not return calls for comment.
