United Nations Worker Arrested in Myanmar

A 38-year-old United Nations worker in Myanmar, her husband, and two relatives were arrested at 4 a.m. yesterday by security personnel, as the country’s military forces crack down on protesters, reports The New York Times.
There are 3,000 U.N. staff members in Myanmar, which has recently been roiled by confrontations between demonstrators and the junta government. The junta says that 10 people have died during its crackdown, although diplomats and others say the number of deaths is higher.
One of three U.N. officials who were arrested last week and then released reported that he had been held in “squalid conditions” with about 800 other people, according to the newspaper.
“We’re concerned with what seems to be happening at night — there are arrests and people being detained,” says Charles Petrie, the most senior official for the United Nations in Myanmar. “There is palpable fear even among our staff.”
