Upscale Orange County Sees Surge at Food Banks

Food banks in Orange County, Calif., home of Disneyland and the setting for television programs showcasing affluent people, are reporting a 40- to 60-percent increase in demand since last June, reports Reuters.

Swamped facilities are struggling to feed the hungry as the economic crisis hits the state’s third-biggest county, and rising need swiftly outpaces donations, food bank officials said.

“We’ve always had a hunger issue here, it’s just been very well hidden. The scary part is that it can happen to anyone now,” said Monica Horner, development manager at Second Harvest Food Bank.
