Usually Spared Worst of Recession, Churches Struggle in Current Slump

Houses of worship, which have historically weathered recessions well, are feeling the full force of the this downturn, struggling with spending cuts, layoffs, and rising requests from congregants for spiritual and material support, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The economic climate for religious organizations is at a 30-year low, with balancing the budget taking priority over membership drives and construction projects, said Richard Klopp, associate director of Indiana University’s Lake Institute of Faith and Giving.
