The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in Richmond, has received a pledge of art and money valued at more than $100-million from James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin.
The gift includes works by George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler.
Mr. McGlothlin is chief executive officer of the United Company, of Bristol, Va., a conglomerate that works in financial services, oil and gas, and industrial-supply distribution. His wife has been a trustee of the museum since 1998. The couple is originally from Virginia but now live in Austin, Tex.
To support their gift of art, which the museum will receive upon their deaths, the McGlothlins will establish an endowment of $20-million for research, conservation, and exhibitions.
The McGlothlins have also pledged $10-million to the museum’s capital campaign. The campaign, which has received more than $152-million, will support renovations of museum facilities and the construction of an additional wing that will be unveiled in 2008.
Suzanne Hall, a spokeswoman for the Richmond museum, said that the McGlothlins would probably lend some of their paintings before the gift is made in full, but that the terms have not been discussed.
The museum was the the beneficiary of significant gifts in 1985, when it was building a new wing. It received financial support as well as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and modern American art from Sydney and Frances Lewis, and British sporting art and French Impressionist works from Paul and Rachel (Bunny) Lambert Mellon.
