Over the past six years, the Walton Family Foundation has given more than $2.5-million to high-profile conservative research groups that often publicly defend Wal-Mart, reports The New York Times.
The foundation is run by the three children of Wal-Mart’s founder, Sam Walton.
The organizations, which include the American Enterprise Institute, the Heritage Foundation, and the Manhattan Institute, have supported Wal-Mart’s practices in newspaper opinion articles, in interviews, and before government committees.
The think tanks have not disclosed their financial support from the foundation when they have taken public positions on Wal-Mart, the newspaper says. Each of the institutions says, however, that its research and other activities are not influenced by its donors.
