Washington Charities Say Budget Cuts Put Homeless at Risk

Washington charities say homeless shelters could be forced to evict hundreds of clients in the face of $20-million in cuts to the city’s budget for homeless services, The Washington Post reports.

A coalition of service providers that get city money said more than 100 families in temporary and transitional shelters are at risk of being evicted if the funds are not restored.

“We’re all talking about this being imminent,” said Christel Nichols, president of the House of Ruth, which provides temporary shelter and other services for victims of domestic violence. That organization lost nearly $500,000 in cuts in the District’s human-services budget and is scrambling for funds to stay afloat, the Post reported last week.
