Williams College Receives Anonymous Pledges Worth $22-Million; Other Gifts

Williams College, in Williamstown, Mass., has received pledges that total $22-million from two anonymous donors.

The first pledge, $15-million, will support theater and dance performances and classes, endow the directorship of the dance program, and support the alumni fund. The second pledge, $7.4-million, will endow a scholarship fund for international students.

Other nonprofit institutions received large gifts:

Albany Medical Center (N.Y.): $1-million from J. Spencer Standish to endow a chair in epilepsy at the Neurosciences Institute.

Bucknell U. (Lewisburg, Pa.): $8-million from the late Robert E. Smith, former chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees, and his wife, Peg Farrell Smith, both alumni of the university, to help build the Sojka Pavilion, part of a new recreation and athletics center.

CDC Foundation (Atlanta): Two trusts valued at $6.2-million from Zell Kravinsky, a real-estate investor in Pennsylvania, and his wife, Emily, a psychiatrist, to create an endowment to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Citadel (Charleston, S.C.): $1-million bequest from Thomas C. (Nap) Vandiver, a South Carolina banker, for scholarships.

Clemson U. (S.C.): $10-million from Darla Moore, partner at the Dallas-based investment firm, Rainwater, and her husband, Richard Rainwater, to endow professorships and improve the educational-leadership and teacher-education programs.

Fairfield U. (Conn.): $10-million from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous for its capital campaign.

Indiana U. System (Bloomington): $1-million unrestricted bequest from Bill Blass, the fashion designer. The gift will support the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection and the university’s Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design.

Monmouth College (Ill.): $1-million bequest from William LeSuer, a vice president for research and development at the Lubrizol Corporation in Wickliffe, Ohio, and his wife, Arlene Snow LeSuer, a genetic researcher and medical technologist, to endow a chemistry professorship.

Montana State U. at Billings: $1.4-million from Sam E. McDonald Jr., the chairman of Wendy’s of Montana, his wife, Judy, and their family, to endow a fund that will support the College of Business and to pay the remainder of a mortgage on the building that houses the college.

Ohio U. Libraries (Athens): $1-million from Robert E. and Jean R. Mahn to establish the Center for Archives and Special Collections. Mr. Mahn, an alumnus of the university, spent 51 years working for the university in a variety of capacities.

Oregon Health & Science U. Foundation (Portland): $3-million from Rex Layton, of Vancouver, Wash., and his wife, Ruth, whose father published the Salem Capital Journal, to support research on Alzheimer’s disease.

Palm Beach Atlantic U. (West Palm Beach, Fla.): $5-million from Joseph R. Gregory, vice chairman of the board of King Pharmaceuticals, in Bristol, Tenn., to help construct a building for the pharmacy school.

Pennsylvania State U. (University Park): $3-million from alumnus George Richards, former owner and chief executive officer of Vitex Packaging in Suffolk, Va., and his wife, Ann, to endow the Civil War Era Center.

Portland State U. (Ore.): $1-million pledge from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous to help build the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science, and Technology.

Princeton U. (N.J.): $6.3-million bequest from Walter Cerf, an alumnus and a former professor of philosophy at the university, to establish scholarships and fellowships for black students, and to endow a philosophy professorship and a scholarship fund.

Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.): $2-million from Robert H. Hoehl, co-founder and chairman of the board of IDX Systems, in South Burlington, Vt., and his wife, Cynthia, for scholarships.

U. of California at Merced: $1-million from Hanimireddy Lakireddy, a cardiologist in Merced, his wife, Vijaya, and their family, to help build an auditorium.

U. of California at Santa Barbara: $1.3-million pledge from Duncan Mellichamp, a chemical-engineering professor at the university, and his wife, Suzanne, a retired elementary teacher, to endow a professorship in chemical engineering and for unrestricted use.

U. of Dayton (Ohio): $2-million unrestricted bequest from Martha Walter, who inherited stock in Bank One, formerly Winters National Bank, from her father. The gift will be used to help build a center for performing and visual arts.

U. of La Verne (Calif.): $1.4-million bequest from Adeline R. Friedman, who graduated from the university’s College of Law in 1979, to support construction at the college.

U. of Miami: $3.9-million from Alex Rodriguez, of Miami, shortstop for the Texas Rangers baseball team, to help renovate the baseball stadium and to endow a scholarship for a Boys & Girls Club member.

U. of North Florida (Jacksonville): $5-million from Luther Coggin, a university trustee and the former owner of 11 automobile dealerships in Florida, and his wife, Blanche, for professorships, scholarships, and fellowships at the College of Business Administration.

Washington and Lee U. (Lexington, Va.): $1-million from Jack Warner, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., retired chairman of Gulf States Paper Corporation, to endow scholarships for female undergraduate students. Mr. Warner stepped down from Washington and Lee’s board of trustees in 1983 in opposition to the university’s decision to admit female students.
