Welcome to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, an independent organization that provides nonprofits and foundations with trustworthy information, actionable insights, analysis, and training, all with the goal of helping sector professionals advance their critical missions.
We are the premier source of fact-based information for hundreds of thousands of people across the social sector who are seeking to stay informed about key issues, learn new approaches that will make them more effective, broaden their perspectives, and accelerate their careers.
The Chronicle offers multiple ways for professionals to stay informed and to connect with people who are involved in efforts to advance the common good, among them:
- A free daily newsletter, Philanthropy Today, that alerts readers to new articles we have posted as well as a roundup of important news about the nonprofit world published by journalism organizations around the nation. Additional newsletters, including Need to Know and Nonprofit Adviser, are available for our members.
- A member-only magazine that offers big-picture ideas, articles that share what works best in fundraising, leadership, and more, as well as provocative opinion essays.
- Webinars that provide training on fundraising, featuring insights from successful nonprofits, expert consultants, and our journalists who specialize in covering foundations, major donors, mass fundraising, and more.
- Forums on hot topics in the nonprofit world, such as how nonprofits and foundations are using artificial intelligence, how tax-law changes are affecting giving, how leaders are shaping smart strategies in turbulent times, and more.
- Multimedia offerings including our Nonprofits Now podcast on leadership, a YouTube channel featuring videos of essential conversations and important insights, plus opportunities to engage with our expert staff members and with tens of thousands of others from across the nonprofit world through our presence on LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, and Threads.
A Focus on Developing Talent for the Sector
What’s more, the Chronicle is dedicated to helping professionals find jobs that can advance their careers and assisting nonprofits and foundations in their search for talent.
Our Commitment and Expertise
The Chronicle of Philanthropy understands how nonprofits and foundations can excel because it has been covering the field for nearly four decades — and because it is a nonprofit itself. In 2023, the Chronicle spun off from the for-profit Chronicle of Higher Education so that it would be better able to expand its offerings for the sector.
Among its signature efforts are:
The Commons, a special section that focuses on how nonprofits and foundations can best work to close the nation’s divides — including racial, geographic, gender, ideological, and other divisions.
Philanthropy 50, an annual ranking of the Americans who give the most to charity.
America’s Favorite Charities, a look at the organizations that raise the most.
Exclusive surveys, such as our studies on leadership and technology.
What philanthropy has accomplished, an in-depth look at the contributions nonprofits is making with support from foundations and big donors.
Our members can access all this content plus every article we have published for more than three decades. We also offer group subscriptions and site licenses so everyone at a nonprofit organization can benefit from our information.
Educating the Public About Philanthropy
Beyond our efforts to serve the information needs of people who work at nonprofits and foundations, a key part of our mission is to help the public better understand the crucial role the social sector plays in communities, across the nation, and around the world. Through our partnership with the Associated Press, we distribute articles to the news service’s members worldwide. In addition, we collaborate with the AP and the Conversation to produce Giving Today, a free weekly newsletter.
What’s more, the Chronicle provides stipends and yearlong coaching to local news organizations so they can learn more about nonprofits and philanthropy and how to report valuable in-depth articles about these organizations for their audiences.
