What Donors of Colors Want to Hear From Nonprofits

On Demand

The protests and rage against racism have triggered an avalanche of giving to groups that were once ignored – but now the nation’s nonprofits face bigger questions about how to appeal to donors of color. Few nonprofits recognize the potential and the power of connecting with donors of color despite research indicating that roughly 14 percent of U.S. millionaires are people of color, many of them self-made. Those groups that do attract donors of color recognize that the effort requires a long-term commitment to change organizational culture and to build trust. It also depends on the expertise of a diverse staff and volunteer force. Connecting with giving circles and affinity groups – or creating them – has also helped nonprofits extend their reach.

Join us to learn directly from experts about how to attract donors of color as the Chronicle interviews Ashindi Maxton, co-founder, Donors of Color Network, which connects wealthy donors. During the briefing, our guests will explain why a commitment to internal diversity is a critical first step to reaching donors of color, answer your questions, and share key findings from recent research on high-net-worth people of color; tips for gathering information to understand your donors’ racial or ethnic background; and guidance on developing approaches that resonate with diverse audiences
