Opioid-Abuse and Pediatric-Patient Care Programs Each Receive $50 Million: Grants Roundup

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

AbbVie

$50 million to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to build a new care center for patients and their families, which will include relaxation rooms, a walking path, gardens, and an accessible playground where patients can play with their siblings and friends.

Bloomberg Philanthropies

$50 million to Vital Strategies, the Pew Charitable Trusts, Johns Hopkins University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The partnership will identify successful approaches to treating and preventing opioid abuse in 10 states with particularly high rates of overdose.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$37 million to 22 arts organizations in Miami to strengthen midsize groups, commission new works of art and music, attract more visitors, and advance education and learning opportunities for up-and-coming artists in South Florida.

Affiliated Managers Group

$20 million matching grant to Massachusetts General Hospital to advance scientific research in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the newly established Sean M. Healey and AMG Center for ALS. The grant matches a $20 million gift from Sean Healey, the company’s chairman, who has been diagnosed with the disease.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Rockefeller Foundation

$10 million through the two foundations’ joint Communities Thrive Challenge. The 10 recipients each received $1 million to spur economic development in financially depressed areas of the United States, generate good jobs for low-income workers, and help more eligible people sign up for public benefits.

Patagonia

$10 million to nonprofit groups that focus on conservation and climate-change work. Rose Marcario, CEO of the clothing company, said changes to the tax code reduced its tax bill by $10 million in 2018, and it will be directing all of that money toward its annual philanthropic giving.

Herzfeld Foundation

$3 million to the Milwaukee Ballet to rename its lobby after the foundation.

M.G. and Lillie A. Johnson Foundation

$1.5 million to the University of Houston at Victoria to enhance health-career education programs for students.


James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation

$1.2 million to the City University of New York Graduate Center for a new postdoctoral scholars program at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality.

Facebook

$1 million to CodePath.org to expand programs and create new courses that teach coding to people from underrepresented groups, including minorities and women, during their first year of college.

McElhattan Foundation

$1 million to Chatham University for its new immersive-media degree program, which will begin next fall.

New Grant Opportunity

The National Psoriasis Foundation is accepting applications for its 2019 research grants and fellowships. The foundation plans to award more than $2 million through eight funding programs, which range from $5,000 for summer student research grants to $100,000 for psoriasis research. Letters of intent for the Psoriatic Arthritis Diagnostic Test Grant are due December 14; the deadline for all other grants is January 18, except for Bridge Grants, which are accepted year-round.
