HSBC Commits $100 Million to Create Climate Solutions Partnership

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

HSBC

$100 million over five years to create the Climate Solutions Partnership, a collaboration with the World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund. The partnership will provide capital to organizations and projects that protect and restore biodiversity, use carbon-reducing technologies, and promote renewable energy in Asia.

Georgia Power and the Georgia Power Foundation

$75 million over five years to advance racial equity and social-justice efforts in Georgia, focusing on education, criminal justice, and economic empowerment.


The energy company’s pledge counts as a part of the $200 million commitment by Southern Company, its parent corporation, to support these efforts over the next five years.

Wells Fargo

$20 million over five years to the Black Economic Alliance Foundation to create the Black Economic Alliance Entrepreneurs Fund, which will provide seed, start-up, and early-stage capital to Black small-business owners.

Jerome L. Greene Foundation

$10 million to Howard University School of Law to back the Greene Public Service Scholars Program, which will provide scholarships and training for students who intend to pursue careers in public-service law.

Heinz Endowments

$10 million to support community-development projects in Pittsburgh, including $1.8 million to renovate the historic New Granada Theater in the Hill District.

Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

$6.4 million to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Service to distribute automated external defibrillators to all law-enforcement organizations throughout the state. This grant follows a grant of $5.9 million that distributed mechanical CPR devices to Nebraska emergency medical services and hospitals.

Kaiser Permanente

$4 million to the National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders to offer small grants, technical assistance, and training to entrepreneurs and independent contract workers of color as they recover financially from the pandemic’s economic fallout.

Northwest Area Foundation

$2.5 million to 31 grantees that are working to advance racial equity and prosperity in their communities. The grants include $500,000 over two years to the Native American Youth and Family Center, which advances Indigenous culture and tradition through housing and economic development in Portland, Ore.

Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

$2 million to the University of California at Los Angeles to create a research fund in the department of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine.

McKnight Foundation

$1 million to 10 recipients in Minnesota in memory of George Floyd, who was murdered one year ago by a Minneapolis police officer. The foundation will announce one winning organization per week; each will receive an unsolicited grant of $100,000 for their work to make Minnesota a more equitable place to live.

PepsiCo and PepsiCo Foundation

$1 million to four grantees that support Asian American restaurant owners. The grants will be shared among the Asian American Business Development Center, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, the National Restaurant Association, and the Asian American Foundation.

ViacomCBS

$1 million to the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism to endow a scholarship for graduates of historically Black colleges and universities who go on to pursue a master’s degree in journalism.

New Grant Opportunities

State Farm is now accepting nominations for its Neighborhood Assist grant program, which will give cash awards of $25,000 each to 40 nonprofit organizations to fund neighborhood-improvement projects. The insurance company will accept 2,000 nominations and narrow the field to 200 organizations before opening voting to the public to determine the winners. Voting will take place online August 18 to 27.

The Cigna Foundation is accepting applications for its new Education and Workforce Development grant program to address the social determinants of health and eliminate health disparities among vulnerable populations. The grants, each worth between $50,000 and $125,000 per year, will support programs for students enrolled in preschool through high school, as well as postsecondary and adult education. The foundation will also provide support to nonprofit groups that offer programs to increase the cultural competency of health care professionals by helping them better understand and address health disparities among vulnerable populations. Applications are due June 18.
