‘These Are Not Normal Times’

To the Editor,
I’m deeply concerned about the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s decision to publish a list of foundations that could be targeted under the Trump administration’s DEI executive order — “Trump’s DEI Order Takes Aim at the Biggest Foundations. Here Are the 346 That Could Face a Probe,” February 27.
These are not normal times, and that key context was missing from the editorial decision to cover the DEI executive order in the form of a list.
Grant makers are facing escalating scrutiny and unprecedented attacks for lawful, mission-aligned investments in equity and justice. In such a moment, the Chronicle has an opportunity to shed light on the harmful effects of President Donald Trump’s order.
Instead, publishing this list of foundations without analyzing the risks or consequences they’re facing ignores how such information could be — and likely will be — weaponized by those seeking to dismantle this work. Simply put, the article read like a tip sheet that could endanger funders and their grantees.
More than ever, journalism should be responsive and responsible. People turn to your publication for both information and thoughtful analysis in turbulent times. I urge the Chronicle to remove the list from the article while ensuring its journalism defends — not endangers — the important task of building a just and equitable future.
