Grants Roundup: Omidyar Group Pledges $100 Million to Address ‘Trust Deficit’

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Omidyar Network

eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar’s philanthropic organization committed $100 million over three years to address what it called a global “trust deficit” by supporting investigative journalism and efforts to fight hate speech and counter misinformation.

One of the first grants will be $4.5 million to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, known for its Panama Papers reporting on offshoring of wealth. Other recipients include the Anti-Defamation League and the Latin American Alliance for Civic Technology.

Jerold B. Katz Foundation

$21 million over seven years to the Houston Methodist Research Institute to help translate health research into practical patient care. Part of the grant will fund a new academy for such work within the institute.

Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation

$20 million to convert a Tulsa, Okla., property the foundation purchased in 2015 into office space for five nonprofits and 170 affordable-housing units.


Communities Foundation of Texas, Rees-Jones Foundation, Dallas Foundation

$13.45 million to the city of Dallas for programs to reduce its stray-dog population, including free spaying and neutering and efforts to educate residents on responsible pet ownership.

Taube Philanthropies

$10.1 million to the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at the University of California at Berkeley to acquire a collection of works by Arthur Szyk, a 20th-century Polish-Jewish artist best known for his politically themed illustrations.

JBS USA

The meat and poultry producer gave $7.5 million to Colorado State University for a new food-innovation center to advance meat science and food-safety practices. The company is also investing $5 million for employee-education programs at the university.

Florence Gould Foundation, Dennis and Mireille Gillings Foundation, Paul W. Zuccaire Foundation

More than $6 million to Institut Pasteur, a French disease-research institute with sites in 26 countries, to support research and establish professor and postdoctoral fellow positions.

PNC Foundation

$5 million to education-focused crowdfunding platform DonorsChoose.org to support pre-kindergarten projects. The grant includes about $500,000 to instantly fund early-education programs for which public and charter schools in states where PNC Bank operates were fundraising on the site, as well as funds to match future donations to DonorsChoose for such projects and to enable the site to include campaigns by HeadStart teachers.


Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art

$1.7 million to 11 organizations for art projects designed to build relationships between American Muslims and non-Muslims. Recipients include the Boston Center for the Arts, the Fells Point Creative Alliance, and the Proteus Fund.

LA84 Foundation

$1.7 million to expand access to 14 youth sports programs in Los Angeles, including Street Soccer USA, the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell after-school program.

Joy in Childhood Foundation

$1.5 million each to the Starlight Children’s Foundation to make children’s hospital rooms more inviting spaces and to Feeding America for programs that bring healthy food to hungry kids.
