Louis Fawcett was about to request the biggest gift of his career: $450,000 for a children’s home in Ethiopia. His nerves kicked in when his plane from Charlotte, N.C., to Scottsdale, Ariz., had technical difficulties.

Back then, Mr. Fawcett, who is now senior vice president for principal gifts at EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia, S.C., was working on a capital campaign for the children’s home, which served 200 orphans. Over time, he had developed a relationship with a cardiovascular surgeon and his family in Scottsdale, whom he thought would be great donors.

Mr. Fawcett traveled across the country to meet with the donor and make the request. Watch the video above to see how his meeting went.

We’d love to hear about your first major gift request. Email your story to us at social@philanthropy.com.
