New Chiefs Promoted at Mary Black and Honolulu Biennial Foundations

Molly Talbot-Metz, vice president of the $85 million foundation in Spartanburg, S.C., has been promoted to president and CEO. She succeeds Kathy Dunleavy, who will retire at the end of June.

Honolulu Biennial Foundation

Katherine Tuider, co-founder of the Hawaii arts festival, will become its first executive director.

Isabella Hughes, the other co-founder and an art critic and curator, will serve as innovation director.

Friends of the Children

This national mentoring organization has announced leadership changes in two major cities.

Gary Clemons, chief program officer at the national office of Friends of the Children, was named executive director of the charity’s New York office.


Thomas Lee has become the executive director of the new Friends of the Children chapter in Los Angeles. Previously he was the director of the Los Angeles Opportunity Youth Collaborative at the Alliance for Children Rights.

More New CEOs

Kevin Dow will serve as the first executive director of Friends of the Rail Park in Philadelphia. Previously, he worked in Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s office as senior deputy director and chief operating officer of the city’s Commerce Department.

Roger Duvall, general manager and director of WEKU in Kentucky, has been named general manager of WVTF Public Radio and Radio IQ in Virginia, effective June 25. He replaces Glenn Gleixner, who is retiring.

Rosanna Maietta, interim president of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation since last May, has been installed permanently in the role. She concurrently serves as senior vice president for communications and marketing of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Other Notable Appointments

Sheryl Arb has joined the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan as vice president for marketing and communications. She comes to the foundation from the Kellogg Company, where she was senior director of global internal communications.


Karyn Boston, chief compliance and privacy officer at Florida International University, has rejoined YMCA of the USA as executive vice president and general counsel. She previously worked at the charity as associate general counsel and chief compliance officer from 2007 until 2014.

Marie Colombo, director of evaluation and learning at the Skillman Foundation, has been promoted to senior director for the Office of the President.

Robert Dean, director of athletics at Crestwood Local Schools, in Ohio, has been appointed pioneer development officer at Malone University.

Beth Fischer, executive director of University Development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, is the new vice chancellor for university advancement at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She succeeds Janis Zink, who retired in January.

Mark Fuller, dean and chair of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been promoted to vice chancellor for development and alumni relations.


Judy Pollock, a fundraising consultant in Dallas, has been named director of development at 4word Women, an organization that helps Christian women achieve success in their careers and relationships.

Eric Valdescaro, executive director of advancement services at California Lutheran University, has joined the University of Hawai‘i Foundation as associate vice president for advancement services.

Departure

William Florescu, general director of the Florentine Opera Company, in Milwaukee, has resigned without explanation. Two years ago, his contract was extended through 2024.

Legacies

Barbara Gradet, the executive director of Jewish Community Services in Baltimore for 12 years until her retirement in 2016, died of a stroke on May 8. She was 69.

Margaret McDermott, a Dallas philanthropist who gave millions to the arts, education, and health care in her lifetime, died on May 6. She was 106. Her late husband, Eugene, co-founded Geophysical Service and Texas Instruments, a manufacturer of technological equipment; he died in 1973. Among her largest gifts were $45 million to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for its medical school and $32 million to the University of Texas at Dallas.


Sam Miller, president of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council from 2010 until his retirement in 2016, has died. He was 66. He also founded and directed Wesleyan University’s Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance and later served as the executive director of the New England Foundation for the Arts.
