President Signs Bill Making E-Filing of Charity Tax Forms Mandatory

July 1, 2019 | Read Time: 1 minute

Nonprofits will be required to file their tax returns electronically with the Internal Revenue Service starting next year under new legislation that President Trump signed into law Monday, according to a news release from the House Ways and Means Committee.

Nonprofit oversight groups have sought e-filing requirements for years. They say such rules will make it easier to shed light on nonprofits’ financial activities.

An exception to the new requirement will allow small nonprofits with revenue of less than $200,000 and assets of less than $500,000 to delay a transition to e-filing if it would cause an “undue” burden.

The provision was part of a broader package of changes in tax laws.
