Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations: a Sampling

Catalyst Theater Company (Washington) The theater group has disbanded.

Center for Maine Contemporary Art (Rockport) The museum has laid off four of its five full-time staff members and has closed for the winter.

Center for Children’s Services (Danville, Ill.) The family-services organization has laid off 21 employees and has temporarily eliminated two of its programs.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra The orchestra laid off 26 full-time and 15 part-time employees, 30 percent of its staff, and has imposed pay cuts of 5 to 10 percent for remaining staff members. The orchestra also reduced performances and eliminated an annual music festival.

Honolulu Symphony The symphony has laid off 19 of its 22 administrative employees, and its musicians agreed to a 15-percent pay cut. The symphony also canceled all concerts in November and December.

Inside Out Playground (Waterville, Me.) The nonprofit playground has closed.

Kingwood Center (Mansfield, Ohio) The center, which includes an estate and gardens, has laid off six employees and has closed for the winter.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving of Delaware The chapter has closed. (Millsboro)

Minnesota Discovery Center (Chisholm) The center, which includes a museum and research library, has temporarily closed, and its staff of 47 has been laid off.

Museum of Modern Art (New York) The museum has halted pay increases and reduced benefits for its staff members.

New Hampshire Political Library (Concord) The library has laid off its paid employees but will continue to operate.

Newseum (Washington) The news museum has laid off 23 percent of its employees.

Rainbows United (Wichita, Kan.) The early-childhood education group has laid off 11 employees and moved its programs to other organizations.

Service Coordination (Frederick, Md.) The human-services organization has eliminated 74 positions, about half of which were through layoffs.

Washington National Opera The opera company has cut eight staff positions and has imposed a salary freeze and furloughs. It has also cut the number of operas it produces.

Willows Theatre Company (Martinez, Calif.) The theater group has closed.
