USAA Provides $30 Million to Help Military Families (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
USAA
$30 million to 24 organizations that are providing direct assistance to military families and nonprofit groups that serve veterans who are experiencing financial hardship during the Covid-19 crisis. The grants include $5.8 million to Army Emergency Relief and $4.5 million to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and will be used to help with educational expenses, child care, and other basic needs.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$23 million to College Advising Corps, City Year, and Saga Education for tutoring and mentoring support to help students commit to finishing their college degrees during the uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment
$20 million over five years to fight systemic racism. The pledge includes $10 million to the newly created NBA Foundation, which will make grants over the next 10 years to drive economic development in Black communities. This sports company owns the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association and the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League, among other professional sports teams.
Minderoo Foundation
$14 million to create the Tech Impact Network at a collection of universities in Australia, England, and the United States. Among the grants is $2.9 million to the University of California at Los Angeles to establish the Minderoo Initiative on Technology and Power at the university’s Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.
GSK
$10 million over 10 years to create the Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective, which will help Black, Latinx, and female students pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Bloomberg Philanthropies
$3 million to the Medford Public Library Foundation to build a new facility, scheduled to open next year. The new building will be named the Charlotte and William Bloomberg Medford Public Library after the billionaire media mogul Michael Bloomberg’s parents, who lived in the town for 65 years.
Richard King Mellon Foundation
$2.5 million 12 colleges and universities in the Pittsburgh region to support their efforts to reopen safely during the Covid-19 pandemic and to expand their online learning offerings.
GHR Foundation
$1 million to the Covid-19 Therapeutics Accelerator, a collaborative project of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mastercard Impact Fund, and Wellcome Trust.
Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation
$1 million to U.S. VETS and the Education Development Center for Women Vets on Point, a program that provides telehealth services to support of mental health and physical care for women military veterans during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mylan
$1 million to Sesame Workshop to create a series of educational resources and videos to meet the social-emotional needs of children during the Covid-19 pandemic.
New Grant Opportunity
The Gerber Foundation is accepting letters of inquiry regarding grants worth up to $350,000 each over three years for research on pediatric health, pediatric nutrition, and the effects of environmental hazards on children under the age of 3. Concept papers are due November 15.
