10 Quit Calif. Boy-Scout Camp Over Firing of Gay Worker

Ten staff members quit a Sacramento-area Boy Scouts summer camp this week to protest the firing of a colleague who claimed he was let go because of his sexual orientation, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Tim Griffin, a 22-year-old Eagle Scout, said he believed the Boy Scouts of America’s recent affirmation of its ban on openly gay members and employees led to his termination from Camp Winton in Amador County, Calif., where he had worked seasonally for eight years.

Local Scouts officials said Mr. Griffin was not fired because he is gay but for failing to dress appropriately for camp, drawing complaints from visiting Scouting leaders. They cited his fingernail polish and earring and said he refused repeated requests to change his appearance.

A third of the camp’s 30 employees walked out Saturday, the day after Mr. Griffin’s ouster.
