$100-Million Geffen Gift to Provide UCLA Medical Scholarships

Entertainment mogul David Geffen has donated $100-million to the University of California at Los Angeles to pay for complete medical education for select students, the Los Angeles Times writes.

The merit-based scholarships will cover tuition, books, room and board, and other school expenses, beginning with 33 incoming students next fall. School officials said the four-year tab for medical students entering in 2013 could top $300,000 and that the Geffen gift would relieve recipients of crushing debt burdens.

The UCLA medical school was named for Geffen, a longtime music and movie executive, in 2002 after he made an unrestricted $200-million gift. The new donation, to be officially announced Thursday, makes Mr. Geffen the biggest single donor to any University of California campus.
