2 Charged in Alleged N.J. Charity Car Scam

The state of New Jersey is suing two men that regulators say used an ostensible children’s cancer charity as a front to buy and sell luxury autos, according to The Star-Ledger of Newark.

The Attorney General’s office alleges Patrick J. Caffrey of Keansburg, N.J., and Carl F. Monto of Beachwood purchased millions of dollars worth of high-end vehicles under the auspices of the Tri County Charity Center of Matawan, thus avoiding sales tax, and sold the cars overseas through an unlicensed dealership operated by Mr. Monto.

According to the lawsuit, the charity said it was raising money for New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to benefit young patients and their families.

Mr. Caffrey and Mr. Monto could not be reached for comment, The Star-Ledger said.
