$21-Million Bequest Goes to Canadian Cancer Organization

The estate of a Canadian merchant-turned-property-developer has given $20.8-million to the B.C. Cancer Foundation, the largest-ever charitable gift in British Columbia, newspaper Burnaby Now reports.

John Jambor, a native of what is now Slovakia, emigrated to Canada in the 1920s, ran a convenience store, and embarked on a career selling real estate and then investing. He died in 1991, 21 years after his wife, Joan, succumbed to cancer.

“This gift fulfills the promise they made to their new country,” said William McCarthy, Mr. Jambor’s grandson.
