30 Private-College Presidents Topped $1-Million Pay in 2008

The heads of 30 private colleges received more than $1-million in compensation in 2008, up from 23 the previous year, writes The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Bernard Lander, who was president of Touro College, an international Jewish institution, topped with list with a package worth nearly $4.8-million, much of it a retroactive award of pay and retirement benefits for his nearly 40 years at the college. Mr. Lander died in February at age 94.

Many of the highest figures, gleaned from the most recently available federal tax documents, reflected big payouts for retiring presidents.
