$45-Million Grant to Bring African Students to Michigan State U.

Michigan State University will receive $45-million from the MasterCard Foundation to enroll students from Africa as part of a larger initiative the financial company’s charity announced Wednesday, says the Detroit Free Press.

The East Lansing campus is one of six nationwide selected for the foundation’s $500-million Scholars Program unveiled at this week’s United Nations special session. The effort, involving a network of universities and nonprofit and youth groups, “will contribute to the emergence of a more equitable, dynamic, and prosperous Africa,” said Reeta Roy, the foundation’s president and CEO.

Michigan State’s share of the money will educate 100 undergraduate and 85 graduate students, the most among participating U.S. universities.
