$67-Million Awarded to Health ‘Navigators’ by White House

The Obama administration announced $67-million in financial support Thursday to clinics, hospitals, faith organizations, and other nonprofit groups to act as “navigators” helping uninsured Americans obtain coverage under the new health-care law, writes The New York Times.

Grants ranging from $20,750 to nearly $5.9-million will go to 105 organizations to spread the word about coverage options in the 34 states setting up federally backed insurance markets under the Affordable Care Act.

The Department of Health and Human Services had initially planned to spend $54-million on the navigator effort but transferred extra money from a fund established to pay for public health and preventive-care programs after Congress refused to allocate funds for education and outreach about the new health-care law.
