$80-Million in Philanthropic Aid for the Poor to Go to Five Cities

Living Cities, a coalition of grant makers and financial institutions, plans to announce on Thursday $80-million in grants, loans, and other investments to five metropolitan areas that have pledged to undertake collaborative efforts that “challenge conventional wisdom” in helping needy people, reports USA Today.
The money will go to organizations that demonstrated they had a plan to involve government, business, and nonprofits in efforts to aid low-income residents.
The winning urban areas are: Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Newark, N.J.
In an opinion article for the latest issue of The Chronicle, Ben Hecht, chief executive of Living Cities, explained how this new program is an example of the kind of rethinking he believes philanthropy must do as the nation seeks to recover from the recession.
