Abuse Victims to Get $166-Million From Northwestern Jesuits

The northwestern order of Jesuits has agreed to pay $166.1-million to victims of sexual or physical abuse of children by priests or people under their supervision, one the largest payouts to arise from the Catholic Church’s abuse scandal, The Seattle Times reports.
About 500 victims, most of them Native American, will receive compensation and written apologies from the order, formally known as the Society of Jesus, Oregon Province, which covers Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The order had previously settled about 200 abuse cases for $84-million. The new payment, about 70 percent of which will be covered by insurance, arises from settlement of the order’s February 2009 bankruptcy filing.
