ASPCA Leader Announces Resignation

The president and CEO of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will step down by year’s end after nearly a decade leading one of the nation’s biggest animal charities, the organization announced Wednesday.
Ed Sayres joined the ASPCA in 2003 in large part to promote a “no kill” model for animal shelters, an approach he had championed as an animal-welfare activist in San Francisco.
The national organization credited Mr. Sayres with working closely with community groups to limit the practice of euthanizing of healthy dogs and cats in shelters, helping law-enforcement agencies crack down on dogfighting, and overseeing a four-fold increase in the ASPCA’s annual revenues.
Mr. Sayres said he planned to pursue “other opportunities in the nonprofit arena where I can make significant contributions.” The organization has retained an international search firm to manage the process of hiring a successor.
