Black Leaders Denounce Calif. NAACP Chief’s Pot Stance

A group of African-American activists on Wednesday called for Alice Huffman, president of California’s NAACP chapter, to step down for endorsing a state ballot measure to legalize marijuana, the Los Angeles Times writes.

“Why would the state NAACP advocate for blacks to stay high?” Bishop Ron Allen, president of the International Faith-Based Coalition, said at a news conference attended by more than 20 religious and local leaders.

Ms. Huffman said the legalization measure, Proposition 19, would eliminate law-enforcement practices that disproportionately target African Americans.
